About a year ago now, right before Covid drove us all into hiding, I found myself at Zeba Bar in DC, meeting with Davina Louise and Mark Baggett about an upcoming event called Time Travelers Gala. Little did I know that was the last night I’d be out in public for any type of gathering for quite some time.

I had met Davina previously at a DCC event in Dupont, some years back, and had seen a post of hers on Facebook about the upcoming event. My thought was that signing up to volunteer might be a good way to have some fun building props and decorations, as well as distract me from a recent loss.

As the pandemic lockdowns went into full effect, the date for the Gala kept getting pushed back. While everybody else was dealing with job loss due to Covid, the universe decided to gift me with finding work for the first time in a good long while. It wasn’t the type of work I was really looking for, but it was doable, for a burner friend, and most importantly, it paid!

I’ve personally struggled with work for quite a few years now, having hit full burnout around 2012. The IT Systems Admin, Quality, and Tech Writing work I was doing required long hours, sometimes pushing 80 hours a week. The last thing I wanted to do was to go back to exactly what had caused me to burnout before.

Over the next few months, through the summer, and into autumn, I managed to stay focused on getting my work done, and created a training manual for my client to use to train their employees. It wasn’t much money, but it was enough to keep me going. More importantly, I was working again, and this time I wasn’t just a cog in the machine, but a part of something new.

GoXaas, a Quality Management / IT Services company, started by Nic Garner, had grown from just an idea last spring to an actual legal company that now has several clients. It’s been a great work experience so far, with lots of care and attention given towards preventing employee burnout by focusing on quality process over break/fix repairs.

In November of 2020, while working on other projects with Davina, she sent me a link for what would become this site, and asked me to take a look. I was immediately sold on the idea, and began to work with her to get the site ready for use by creators in the DC area.

Once again, I found myself knocking the rust off my old tech skills, this time teaching myself about WordPress, Let’s Encrypt, and trying to remember how DNS CNAME records worked. I also learned Jira and Confluence to help setup a workflow to manage setting up this very site.

It’s taken about four months of stead work now to get this site up and running. It’s been a labor of love, and there is so much more yet to come. If you happen to see something that isn’t quite right yet, please let us know about it, but also please understand that this site is just getting started.

Also, if you have any ideas for features that you would like to see implemented in the future, please comment below!
